🏁 Sonoma Raceway β€” Summer 2026 Events

← Events Home

Sonoma Raceway (~50 min from Alameda) is the obvious pick for Oscar β€” real cars doing real racing on the track from Cars. Here’s what’s happening between now and early August.

1. NASCAR Weekend β€” Toyota/Save Mart 350

June 26–28, 2026 Β· πŸ† Top pick for Oscar

NASCAR’s only Northern California stop β€” stock cars roaring around the same road course layout Lightning McQueen races on. Three full days:

  • Fri Jun 26 β€” Practice, qualifying, ARCA Menards Series β†’ kids 12 & under FREE

  • Sat Jun 27 β€” NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series / Pit Boss/FoodMaxx 250 β†’ kids 12 & under FREE

  • Sun Jun 28 β€” Toyota/Save Mart 350 (NASCAR Cup Series, 12:30 PM) β†’ kids 12 & under $10

  • Camping available on-site

  • Fan zone, driver appearances, interactive exhibits

  • Tickets: sonomaraceway.com or call (800) 870-RACE

Best for Oscar: Saturday (loud stock cars, free for him, less crowded than Sunday) or go all weekend and camp.

2. Sonoma Drags (Wednesday Night Drags)

Recurring Wednesdays β€” Jun 10, Jul 10, plus more through summer

Grassroots drag racing on the quarter-mile. Anyone with a license can race their own car (passes tech inspection). β€œTop The Cops” program lets high schoolers race law enforcement. Great low-key evening outing β€” gates open ~4:30 PM, racing till 10 PM.

  • Cost: Spectators ~$10–15 (check site)
  • Fun for Oscar: watching regular cars (not just race cars) go fast

Next date: Wed Jun 10 (rescheduled from May 27). Also Jul 10 per the track calendar.

3. DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals

July 17–19, 2026 (Fri–Sun)

The 38th annual β€” Top Fuel dragsters hitting 330+ mph. In 2025 Brittany Force set a world speed record of 343.16 mph here. Nitro-burning Funny Cars, Pro Stock, the whole NHRA show. Loud, fast, and sensory-overwhelming in the best way.

  • Preceded by NHRA Division 7 Drag Races (Wed–Thu Jul 15–16) β€” Lucas Oil series, more low-key but free/cheap
  • Kids pricing TBC β€” past years had kids 12 & under at reduced rates
  • Camping available

For Oscar: The noise and fire from Top Fuel cars is intense β€” bring ear protection. If he’s into it, awesome. If not, the Division 7 day (Jul 15–16) is more laid back and cheaper.

4. Ferrari Challenge North America

July 22–26, 2026 Β· Main race day Saturday Jul 25

IMSA-sanctioned Ferrari-only race series. Trofeo Pirelli and Coppa Shell classes β€” field of Ferraris (296 GT3, 488 Challenge) on the road course. This is the final North American round of the season.

  • Kids 12 & under FREE
  • Great for Oscar: Ferraris = the prancing horse = Cars (Mia and Tia are Ferraris, Luigi is a Fiat, but the vibe is pure Italian sports car)
  • Likely to have paddock access to see the cars up close

Best for Oscar: Second best pick after NASCAR. Ferraris are gorgeous and the paddock is usually open for close-up viewing.

5. Track Day β€” Open Track Days

Jun 6–7 (Track Day Providers), Jun 10 (Open Track Day), Jul 7–8 (David Murry Track Days)

Various car clubs/orgs rent the track for lapping days. Not spectator-focused, but you can sometimes watch from the hillside for free. Good if you want a chill outing where you just park and watch cars go around.

Tips

  • Ear protection for Oscar is non-negotiable for NHRA, recommended for NASCAR. Bring kid-sized muffs.
  • Parking is free at general lots for most events; premium parking available
  • Food β€” typical track food (burgers, hot dogs, etc.) β€” or pack a picnic for the hillside
  • Sun β€” Sonoma gets hot. Bring sunscreen, hats, water. The track has limited shade.
  • Drive β€” ~50 min from Alameda via 880 β†’ 37 β†’ 121. No bridge tolls.
  • Oscar’s Cars connection β€” the Sonoma road course appears in several racing games and the track layout is the kind of road course Lightning McQueen would race. The NASCAR weekend is closest to what he sees in the movie.
